This class is for people, who want to deepen their knowledge in Contact Improvisation and who have an interest to explore their dance abilities and their own dance.
I like to work with bodywork and movement explorations of our human anatomy. A body offers an interesting field of research. We don´t just find interesting impulses for our dance, but widen our dance technicals skills. I learned this approach from Body-Mind Centering, an experimentals method to bring body and mind into relationship and into dialog. I am interested in connecting this approach with Contact Skills and dancetechnique.
I invite you in this course to work on your dance expression, your dance abilities, your contact skills and group improvisation.
This course is before the Südstern Jam, so that you have the possibility to try out the experienced things and develop them further.
The class starts on the 13.1 until 30.3.2012 I would like to work with a fixed core, so that we can grow together, but also to be open to visitors.

We will spend some time arranging our bodies so that they are able to fold and meet the floor smoothly and efficiently. Then we will meet the human landscapes of others and investigate how we can have the support of the floor through each other acting as a moving floor. We will see how immediate we can be in giving support, absorbing each others weight and landing. Once we have landed, we are ready to fly. We will fly high and low, investigating the subtle shifts in the body that can become delicious moments of flight.

Immerse for 5 days in the art of co-creation, of being in Contact and Improvising. In contact we belong, with improvisation we are free!
http://www.breitenbush.com/events/jan22-27.html
Experience the inclusion and intimacy of exploring with a small group (max. 20) supported by the quiet heart of winter and healing waters. Transformation happens.
Content unfolds according to the expression and needs of those present. We are moved by what emerges from within and without when we focus our awareness, on and off the dance floor.
We gather for three practices each day. All sessions share the same format. There is an opening circle for intentions, followed by a period of investigation and a closing circle to share our experiences.
Morning-
AWE Awareness Witnessing Experience
Calling attention to the witness within. Experience is always occurring. How aware of it are we?
Noticing what we notice to become more aware of ourselves, being and responding.
Afternoon-
ARC Awareness Researching Co-creation
Exploring the art of relationship in the act of co-creation. What are we doing? What else is possible?
Using contact to improvise in behalf of mutual well-being.
Evening-
PIP Presence Investigating Performance
Being curious about the experience of seeing and being seen.
What/why/how/when/where…. do we perform? do we view performance?
This is a special time of support to be with self in the context of others. This work is based in Contact Improvisation, a form that radically calls each of us to own and care for our experience while aware of our connection to all that is. The C.I. paradigm offers well-being for all. We gather to explore this way of being.
All are welcome to participate. Experience in Contact Improvisation is not required, only a curiosity and willingness to explore the principles involved.
COST: Sun – Wed $90, Sun – Fri $120, plus lodging. For lodging options and costs go to-

You must call Breitenbush 503-854-3320 to register and early is good to save a spot and get the lodging you prefer.
Dance Improvisation can be seen as a constant play of inner and outer forces, with the body itself as the border between the two. Internal sensations, desires, ideas and images continually well up and demand expression. Externally we are confronted with an ever-changing perceptual landscape of relationships to space, location, others, and the ever-present consequences of our own movement choices.
Awareness is the key that unites the inner and outer worlds, that permits decision-making as well as conscious non-decision-making. Awareness training is fundamental for the improvisor to continue to expand her palette of possibilities for action in any given moment.
Inside/Outside
In this weekend workshop we will spend one day working in the familiar space of the studio and one day working outside.
Playing with the senses, getting to know the inner and outer landscapes, and making dances from that state.
This workshop is geared towards improvisors (dancers, clowns, musicians, actors, people inside bodies…!)

ContacTango
with Leilani Weis
Tango and Contact Improvisation are two forms of improvisation that have many points in common, but also different points of views. The one supports the other in a creative and technical process.
Technically we will work on the musicality, the axes and the walking as fundamentals for recognizing the Tango. The structure of the body as support, the relationship with the gravity and the awareness of the own center and the others, opening the spherical possibilities of movement as fundamentals from Contact Improvisation.
The creative process will look for its source in the highly sensual and poetic images from Tango and the less commons, but not less poetical images from Contac.
Thru the lessening we will create this dialog fully of play, music and images.
Leilani Weis. Chile/Italy. Teaches Contact Improvisation and Tango and researches and creates movement performance pieces. She is devoloping and researching Contactango Technical fundaments. Weis organizes LunatiContact events and is co-founder and art director of Central de Movimiento Company. She has taught and performed in Latin America, USA and across Europe. She is engaged in an ongoing learning experience through the fundamentals of Contact Improvisation.

ContacTango Workshop
Leilani Weis(Cile/Italia)

April 15, 2012 – Trios in Motion
All Levels
April 1, 2012 – Duets within Ensemble
June 10, 2012 – Momentum and Direction
We will research how directing our movement and thoughts can guide us towards greater ease and options in partnering. The Contact Improv skills taught in the workshops will include both softer rolling points and dynamic lifts. Exercises will guide you to access your core-support, spiral, and multi-dimensionality. We will learn to listen and respond in the moment to ourselves, partner/s and the space around us. The exercises taught are informed by the Alexander Technique principles of whole body integration and freeing patterns of tension to find more effortless and efficient partnering.
The workshops will be taught using a student-centered research approach, where you will have opportunities to direct the learning and sometimes will be called on to take roles of leadership and facilitation.

Spontaneous Composition: Improv Ensemble Dance Workshops
Sunday Workshops from 2-6pm
April 1 – Duets within Ensemble
May 13 – Habits & Choices
June 17 – “Ready for anything, prepared for nothing” (F.M. Alexander)
We will draw from insights of the natural world to deepen our research in group improvisation. Drawing from nature we will uncover our instincts to respond to others, to our own emotions and body, and to the environment around us. Scores will be taught to develop awareness of the choices available to us on how, when, and in what way to respond with our whole self. How our choices affect others, ourselves and the environment will be explored. Be ready for anything!
We will create movement as a group in the moment, exploring physical, spatial, emotional, rhythmical, and vocal scores. Solos, duets, and trios will be framed within the ensemble. Movement exercises will be taught to engage your imagination and will draw upon your body and mind as inspiration to dance. The exercises will awaken your spatial perception while deepening your connection with yourself in relation to others.
The workshops will be taught using a student-centered research approach, where you will have opportunities to direct the learning and sometimes will be called on to take roles of leadership and facilitation.
The last half hour of each workshop will be open for the public to witness and view our process.

INTERNATIONAL CONTACT IMPROVISATION TEACHERS MEETING IN LATIN AMERICA, addressed to Contact Improvisation teachers and experienced practitioners committed in the practice of transmission.
The Axis Syllabus is a bridge discipline that amalgamates up-to-date, pertinent information from a host of sciences and proposes a teaching and studying methodology for the transmission of this information. Detailed anatomical and bio-mechanical information can serve to create a sophisticated and respectful link between our fantasy and the quantum reality experienced by our cells. However, because information transmission has high priority, the AS also draws from sciences such as sociology, psychology, and pedagogy, which together inform an effective and ethical mode for teaching and learning. The Axis Syllabus provides a technical framework for the artistic exploration and expression of feelings, including our senses and perceptions.
Contact Improvisation – Prediction and Response
Techniques for safe, enjoyable and creative partnering. Understanding what might happen through what happened, we might better be able to adapt and benefit from arising opportunities in an improvisation. CONTACT IMPROVISATION in PERFORMANCE
integrating movement technique, improvisation and skills for performance
9-11 of March 2012, Warsaw, Poland
Friday 6-9 pm workshop
Saturday 11am-2pm & 3.30-6.30 workshop, 7-10 pm jam with live music
Sunday 11am-2pm & 3.30-6.30 workshop, 8pm public performance and jam
On Saturday and Sunday during the breaks we plan common lunch, please bring some vegetarian/vegan food to share.
The price for the whole workshop is 55 Euro. Foreign participants are kindly asked to send an e-mail to Natalia bajkinatalki@gmail.com, so that we can arrange how to make the payment.
We will help travelers to find a place to stay overnight at homes of varsovian contacters.
Workshop is for people with some previous experience either in contact improvisation/ improvisation or in performance.
Workshop will be led in English.
In this workshop we will explore intensively how to transform our regular CI-practice towards a performative movement art – in order to create instant composition in all its diversity, complexity and freshness.
The following questions will lead us through the week: What are the tools to stay connected with my own dance while being deeply involved in the physicality of a CI-duet? // How to achieve presence and authenticity to feed my dance and how do I keep this sense in front of an audience? // How can I connect the inner and outer space – what in fact does this mean? // What are the inherent compositional aspects of CI? // How to integrate compositional principles with the freedom of improvisation?
The first class of the day will focus on movement skills in solo, duet and trio. We will look for ways how to deal with gravity in a clever way, how to move upside-down and to integrate flying and falling into our dance. The key ingredients will be a distinguished body awareness in order to move and to communicate with our partner precisely, the playful interaction of technique and improvisation and the conscious (and constant) use of timing and space – which in fact are also fundamentals for performing CI.
In the second class we will go beyond CI-technique and improvisation skills to see what changes fundamentally when one is exposed to an audience. It’s a lot about staying honest with yourself, dealing with the energy of the public and handling surprising moments in a creative way. Trusting your instincts and your intuition will be just as important as learning about compositional aspects and using CI-technique to give a clear base for performance.
For those who feel themselves ready, the workshop will end with a public studio performance to show our work to an audience and of course to bring our practice into reality. It’s good to know: finally performance can be trained only while performing.
Come prepared to both move a lot and dive deep down into a subtle work with your body and to get energized from being on stage!
Adrian Russi is a one of the leading CI-teacher in Switzerland and travelling all over Europe to teach and perform Contact and Free Improvisation. He is deeply involved in CI since 1992 and in the meantime he is dedicating the biggest part of his life to this wonderful dance form.
After his studies of New Dance at “bewegungs-art” in Freiburg/Germany he continued his education with many different teachers, among them Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith who have started to develop CI in the early seventies with a group of other movers. Besides this his teaching is also influenced by his studies of different kinds of martial arts and Craniosacral Bodywork.
He offers his work as a free lancer to a wide range of people and also gets regularly invited to teach in schools. In his teaching he focuses on the technical aspects of CI (ease, precision and strength) as well as on matters of perception (body-sensation, connection of inner and outer space, of bottom and top, centre-periphery) and on a creativity coming from a distinct body-awareness. For him the pleasure to play, deep engagement in the dance, and respect for others are the basis for gaining the most possible in dancing CI.
As a performer he works with many different international artists and his performances are primarily based on Free Improvisation incorporating Contact Improvisation, dance, dance-theatre, voice and live music. In 2007 he initiated “Moving Men”, a men’s trio with Charlie Morrissey and Jacky Miredin touring with there performance-work all over Europe.
As an organizer of CI-events he is involved in many festivals, jams and teachers-meetings, among them the “Moscow Contact and Performance Festival” and the “International Berner Jam”.

Workshop with Danya Elraz
This workshop touches upon a wide range of materials- from the technical to the emotional work of Contact Improvisation. Moving between dancing in solo and duet, we will experience various states of mind in the dance. When is our focus on ourselves? when is it on the other? What is a duet? Do we really dance together?
We will try and find our internal motivation for movement, our solo within a duet, our duet in a solo, sometimes using technique oriented exercises, and sometimes more theatrical emotional work. We will try to experience how the principles of CI can be used in solo dancing, and how our solo quality can smoothly change into a duet. Suitable for experienced dancers as well.

Improvising Contact Improvisation
intensive workshop with Benno Voorham
1st – 5th April, 10.30 – 16.30
at MovingEast Centre for Dance, Martial Arts and Complementary Medicine
St Matthias Church Hall, Wordsworth Road, Stoke Newington,
London, N16 8DD
Contact Improvisation will be the common ground to continue and deepen our skills to come into a physical and kinaesthetic dialogue with others. By awakening our physical and sensory awareness we will bring mind and body into a state of readiness and receptiveness for dancing in a playful and spontaneous way. We will spend time in the mornings to work on various skills and explore the underlying principles of Contact Improvisation, playing with physical forces such as gravity, levity, momentum and inertia. In the afternoon we will work with different scores and structures for improvisation with a strong focus on developing a playful and subtle presence in our dancing.
“Being in the moment” will be our motto during this intensive workshop. We will play and create dances in which we use our imagination and creative potential. We will spend time to tune our bodies in movement, to develop a sense for ‘being in the moment’ from where we will dive into the realm of contact and improvisation.

In my work as a dance maker and improviser I am interested to explore the crossroads between dance, contact improvisation and theatre. Using the potential of the human body and contact improvisation to tell stories through movement in a non-literal way.

During this workshop will spend time working on various skills and exploring the underlying principles of Contact Improvisation, playing with physical forces such as gravity, levity, momentum and inertia. We will work with different scores and structures for improvisation with a strong focus on developing a playful and subtle presence in our dancing.
Articulation and playfulness are two keywords for this workshop in which we will dance for and with each other. Dances in which we can expect to be in physical contact at any moment and at the same time keeping an awareness of ones own directions in improvising.
In my work as a dance maker and improviser I am interested to explore the crossroads between dance, contact improvisation and theatre. Using the potential of the human body and contact improvisation to tell stories through movement in a non-literal way.

Light falls
As easily as the Light falls into your eyes,
Weight falls through you.
Weight is not a thing, it’s a force with the direction.
We can guide that direction.
We move inside of network of forces and direction.
We are a force, direction to be determined.
To follow or to lead? What do you follow? Where do you lead?
What if I just let things happen?
To let is not to be mindless.
To let is not to be passive.
How can I let this moment happen as it is?
Contact improvisation.
If I would say that this is not a basic course, I would lie.
Everything is always basic. It’s the depth of sensation that takes you further.
If I would say this is a basic course, I would lie as well.
We are going to do some really simple contact improvisation.
Moving alone and together, concentrating how do I sense the the forces around me. And I’m talking about physics.

This workshop will address the subject of breaking our own patterns and limits within the practice of Contact Improvisation. We will deal with one of the side effect of many beginners and advanced practitioners – staying confined within our mutual kineshpheric bubble.
Contact is the physical technique, Improvisation is the life behind this dance. Much of our emphasis in the jams, classes and workshops goes to improve our physical technique yet not much work explores the dance that can grow from our bubble and beyond it.
One glass ceiling that an advanced Contact Improviser may encounter is seeing the dance as only 2 people in a very confined space – the bubble. The side effect of this is that the world disappears and there is only the sensation and movement that is inside our mutual bubble, this nice and comfortable feeling holds us back from going into the next step – keeping the same feeling of our point of contact, using our strong technique, whilst improvising with everything else that is there in the moment.
In this workshop we will try to break our bubble – not to lose that feeling but rather to grow from it into a wider bigger world. To Improvise not only with our physical partner and input but also with space, composition, and other potential partners that are not yet in physical contact.
This workshop is meant for people who have experience in one of these fields – Contact Improvisation, Dance Improvisation and dance performers who wish to enlarge their vocabulary in dance and on stage.
The number of participants is limited. If you wish to participate you need to register in advance by sending an E-mail to this address – saskia@contactdance.co.uk
Tom Goldhand – I am a performance artist in the field of Dance & Contact Improvisation. I studied Dance and theater Improvisation in Israel at “Hakvuza beyafo” and “play school for Improvisation”. After finishing my studies I moved to Amsterdam where I had the privilege to work, learn and be inspired by great teachers of dance and contact Improvisation – Paulien de Groot, David Zambrano and Karl Frost amongst others.
In the last years I perform and give workshops on the technique of Improvisation in Dance and Contact. 2 years ago I chose Amsterdam as my base and co founded with 5 other performance artists the group – Mono Collective that performs free and anchored Improvisation pieces as well as choreographed pieces.
For me, Improvisation is a way of life and I try to take it out of the studio into everyday life. I believe that the core of man spirit comes from new experiences, and that it is much more important to be open and present, than to make plans and try to stick to them.

The Art and Sport of Contact Improvisation
In CI, the movements and forms arise as a result of what happens in the present moment. Can they be truly spontaneous or are they patterns that repeat from past experiences? Are such movements artful or is it the form as a whole that has an aesthetic appeal? Simone Forti once used the term “art sport” to describe Contact Improvisation (CI). This apt description includes the physicality in the sport, and the creativity in the art. For me, the sport aspect has always been easier to come by. The “rules” of the game are clear¬ the laws of physics, how we communicate to establish trust and support, taking risks to stretch boundaries. The art has been more elusive, but less so when grounded in experience. Creating the bridge or connections between the “art” and the “sport” will be a primary theme of this workshop.
What is necessary to practice, safely, with ease, and connected to the players? We will conduct a survey of CI essentials, with a focus on efficient, effortless use of technical skills, to develop a facility for, and availability to, changing physical states and levels of touch and weight. Once essentials have been established, we expand our practice to include issues related to the art of CI ¬recognizing composition as it happens spontaneously, or intentionally. What makes a composition? Is it the way we perceive the action, or is it the intention of the player? Framing our intention, we practice embodying stillness in movement, and movement in stillness, as an aesthetically satisfying compositional activity. Furthering our practice, we will working with ways of moving “out of the box” of the duet form, expanding our range of choices of how to include more than one other dancer while moving seamlessly into, and out of, contact. We will practice strategies for improvising, or how we improvise the way we improvise, as well as ways of embodying our imagination in movement. How do we make choices that create more choices, rather than limit them?
ACCOMMODATION can be in rooms with a bathroom (double or triple) or in mini-flats during the workshop, and during the jam it will be possible to sleep in a common room using your own mattress and sleeping bag.

Moab Workshop: May 23-24, 2012 — with Karen Nelson
Moab Jam: May 24-28, 2012
Website: www.MoabJam.com
Registration opens Saturday, February 25, 2012
Karen Nelson Workshop description: Contact Improvisation is a moving, “meditation in action” form of dance. Movers focus on direct experience of the physical forces we relate to as humans on earth: gravity, momentum, kinesthesia, the stuff of physics. In this workshop we will review some essential images of Contact, such as the small dance of skeletal balance as introduced by Steve Paxton. We will practice various rolls and puzzles and embody these navigation tools to enhance our solo and partner dancing. We will study some practical safety movements to help our muscle memory kick-in when we need it— during complex partnering that occurs in a freely improvised contact duet.
Jam description: The Moab Jam features rich dancing, creative friends, beautiful surroundings, and opportunities to explore both on and off the dance floor. Being under the wide-open desert sky surrounded by colorful landscape fills one with the spirit to move and create. We invite you to come join us and experience the magic of dancing in the desert. We create a friendly and supportive environment where you can enjoy the Jam that you want — whether it’s dancing non-stop, spending time with new and old friends, or taking lots of time to nourish yourself with the solitude of nature. Jam hosts lend their inspiring presence to the jam, and part of their role is to circulate and “juice-up” the dancing spaces. They lead warm-ups, facilitate mixers, guide afternoon classes or labs, provide feedback/coaching, and offer one-to-one sessions.
$55-$65 for the workshop. $195-235 sliding scale for the jam.

Dance in nature with elements of Butoh and Contact Improvisation.
This workshop, opened to everybody, invites you to a contact dance with nature: well rooted in the ground and in dialogue between your center and the center of the earth and those of your partners. We will go on an inward journey where we will explore the resonance of our body landscapes in tune with the natural surroundings.
Alone and as a group, we will engage in a sensual and playful approach toward our environment, using our skin and senses as interfaces and spaces to meet. When we find ourselves ready to open, we can allow the dance to take us into subtle touches or perhaps wild waves.
Methods
Improvised dance (Contact improvisation, new dance) as well as movement meditation, voicework, breathing and opening to the senses. There will be a big space for playfullness and creativity and also moments of sharings with the group.
Theme this year: dance / meet the duality of nature

with NANCY STARK SMITH
An introduction to the full spectrum of dance improvisation work that Nancy is currently exploring using contact improvisation as a base. This will encompass CI technique and practice, improvisation scores (including the Underscore), listening practice, compositional awareness, contemplative practice, jamming, and observing.
Through our dancing and watching, we will study physical and energetic changes of state, natural composition, presence, and relationship—in groups, solo, in and out of contact. Please come prepared for intensive practice (6 hours daily) and a little bit of fun!
a 5 rythms workshops combining “waves” in water and on earth. In this workshop you can discover the magic of improvisation mostly in water but also on earth, so that you will deal with the natural force of both elements.
The warm water invites you to let go and to experiment an organic and fluid way of moving. You learn how to play with its resistance and dynamic, how to transition between following the waves and making soft and clear propositions. You go into aquatic and subaquatic explorations, experience effortless breathing and play with the balance between weight and weightlessness. On land you also learn how to let yourself fall, how to stay in graceful flow or dynamic stillness, falling into motion.

Contact improvisation is a hybrid art form that draws from Aikido and Tai Chi as well as an integration of many other mind-body movement practices.
Through the immediacy of sensation, touch, and the subjective experience of gravity, these workshops engage us with the physicality of weight, force and momentum.
Physical communication, listening, and a process of ‘letting go’ takes us into ‘the unknown’ of what emerges in the dance in the present moment.
We negotiate relationship with self and each other building a sense of tuning to space and group presence.
Let’s, together, enjoy the sensitivity, exhilaration and playfulness of the dynamics of the space-between that contact improvisation opens up to us.
Val Smith.
As a dance artist and movement educator I draw directly from contact improvisation as source, passion and teacher.
I have been teaching and researched this dance form since 1998 throughout NZ, Australia, and the US and continue to want to learn and develop my understanding of its’ possibilities.
Inspired by the intrinsic social politics of contact improvisation, I love how there is always more to know of how touch and connection with others in space opens understandings of self, relationship and humanity.
There is so much more to know!
I acknowledge the following people as significant influences in my contact improvisation practice: Alys Longley, Stu Phillips, Nita Little, Danny Lepkoff, Joey Lehrer, Neil Marcus and Steve Paxton. Also Body Mind Centering, the research of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, and other somatic practices heavily influence the material that I play with when teaching contact improvisation.

Planning has begun for this year’s Global Underscore practice…here’s an update!
Nancy Stark Smith and Mike Vargas will be hosting/facilitating one site of the 2012 Global Underscore as part of the Somatics and Technology Conference taking place at the University of Chichester, in Chichester, UK, on Saturday, June 23, 2:30–6:30 pm (UK time) and we are basing the timing of the rest of our global practices around this.
Underscore NYC will be practicing at Eden’s Expressway simultaneously from 9:30am-1:30pm EST. Mark your calendars, start reserving space, and let us know you’re thinking about it by emailing Jesse in NYC at underscorenyc@gmail.com.
The Underscore is a framework for practicing and researching dance improvisation that Nancy has been developing since 1990 based on her work with Contact Improvisation. It is a long jamming/CI/improvisation score that guides dancers through a series of “changing states”—from solo relaxation and sensitizing to gravity and support, through group circulation and interaction, to contact improvisation engagements, then opening out to full group improvisation, and back to rest and reflection.
For the past 11 years, a Global Underscore has been occurring near the summer solstice. Conceived and organized by French dancer Claire Filmon for 10 years, the Global Underscore Solstice is an annual event during which dancers at many sites around the world practice the Underscore simultaneously.
We hope you’ll join Nancy, Mike and the other Underscores happening around the globe on June 23!

Embedded in the Somatics and Technology Conference (http://somaticstechnologyconference2012.com/), the Chichester Global Underscore will take place in an unusual and fascinating context. Nancy will give an Underscore talk to the conference participants on Saturday morning to offer some preliminary background and outline the basic structure (Global Underscore dancers are welcome but not required to attend). Later that day, the Global Underscore practice will occur, with live music improvised/composed by Nancy’s longtime collaborator, musician Mike Vargas. The Chichester Underscore will be danced by improvisers from London and elsewhere who have had previous training in Contact Improvisation and the Underscore. There may also be a special technological component. The event will be open for observation by conference participants.
After a brief reception following the Underscore, Global Underscore dancers and observers are welcome come out together for an evening meal in a local restaurant.
We hope you’ll join us and the other Underscores happening around the globe on June 23!

The Monastery; some facts about the place:
The monastery is a gothic jewel reconstructed in the 15th century by the Franciscan order together with the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In this way, it is purposely combining masculine and feminine elements, ofering to its inhabitants a symbolic spatial completeness. In the centre of the building there is a courtyard; a symbolic womb from which all living beings and creatures are born. It is surrounded by a windowed corridor with a unique vaulting, which gives it a surprisingly acoustic resonance. This was the place where the monks used to walk, sing and meditate.

Each participant will have the chance to research and develop their own personal strategies within the action of making artistic decisions in real time.
The course deals with how either dancer or musician uses their musicality in time and space within this improvisational arena, how they manage their own personal creativity in the context of other creators. LEARN MORE
DANCE IN URBAN SPACE – ISTANBUL
Yanaël Plumet
9 >14 July – fee 180€
This workshop proposes to a group of performers to experiment different approaches of some urban spaces of Istanbul, playing with the range of qualities that can emerge from mere pedestrian presence to overt performativity.
Shifting from the studio to public spaces, we will explore the filters through which the flow of external information penetrates our physiological system and stimulates our physical imagination to become presence and action.
An invitation to investigate the dynamics between body and environment by allowing architecture, rhythms, densities and specific atmospheres of the city to inform and influence our process of making dances in this urban context. LEARN MORE
FEE FOR BOTH WORKSHOPS 450 €
long weekend workshop + Mike Vargas piano salon
with Nancy and Mike Vargas
Fri.–Sun., July 6–8, 2012
at Moving East, London, UK
(Underscore 3.00–7.00pm, potluck and discussion 7.30-9.30pm)
A weekend workshop with Nancy and Mike that addresses the practice of Contact Improvisation and group improvisation within the framework of the Underscore and live improvised music. Sessions will focus on each of these areas separately and in combination (Contact w/ and w/o music, an afternoon session with dance musicians, group improvisation scores and skills, and the Underscore).
The Underscore is a framework for practicing and researching dance improvisation that Nancy has been developing since the early 1990s based on her work with Contact Improvisation. The Underscore is a long jamming/CI/improvisation/composition score that guides dancers through a series of “changing states”—from solo relaxation and sensitizing to gravity and support, through group circulation and interaction, to contact improvisation engagements, then opening out to full group improvisation, and back to rest and reflection.
This weekend, we’ll study the interactions between improvising dancers and improvising musicians—in contact improvisations and larger group improvisations, including the Underscore. How can dancers and musicians support one another’s imagination and concentration? How much diversity, of intention and activity, can we all accommodate? How free are the dancers? How free are the musicians?
While combining and refining our practices of Contact Improvisation, the Underscore, and music, we will focus on detailed listening and watching, mixing many species of movement with many species of sound. Our goal is to develop a variety of conscious, deliberate relationships between what we hear, what we see, what we feel, and how we play.
Nancy’s longtime collaborator, composer/improviser Mike Vargas, will be co-teaching the workshop through his music and his point of view, informed by 30+ years of working with dance of all kinds, the last 12 years with Nancy, CI, and the Underscore.
Saturday afternoon’s session is open to musiciansinterested in working with improvising dancers.
Mike Vargas (www.mikevargas.net/) will lead a lunchtime discussion for musicians from 11.00am – 1.00pm. From 1.00 – 2.30 musicians will set up and warm up in the space and then will combine with the dancers and improvise together from 2.30 – 5.30pm. Numbers very limited. Apply by email to Robert with letter of interest stating your experience working with dance and improvisation.

What make us move and sound?
Memory, images, the ever awake senses…
What is our source for creation?
Can we hear music in silence?
Could silence be our dance partner?
Dharma Nature organizes a retreat from 6 – 16 of august 2012 in which dancers and musicians have the possibility to explore the impact which silence and meditation can have on their art. And likewise, to discover how music and dance can benefit their meditation practice.
Experience
No experience is required, but there will not be music classes, so musicians should have their own practice. This isn’t the case for the dancers, as there will be improvisation, contact improvisation, butoh and other movement classes in nature and in the dance hall. People with a curiosity of movement and little dance experience are welcome too. No meditation experience is needed.
Program
Silent mornings, periods of meditation, teachings and group discussions on the theme ‘meditation and creativity’, dance classes drawing from different movement research techniques, guided vocal improvisation sessions and a lot of free time for your own practice, or to jam with others. Being with both musicians and dancers, some magic might happen on the playground!
Teachers
Denis Robberechts (www.dharmanature.org) will teach meditation
Kristien Sonnevijlle (http://sansville.wordpress.com/) will teach dance and vocal improvisation
Teachings will be in English, with French and Dutch translation available if necessary…
Place
Everything will take place at the dojo yourt ‘La source’ (see www.lempreintedutao.org for pictures), a wonderful space lost in the heart of nature in the South of France. We will sleep in tents, and the big and beautiful yurt will be our meditation, meeting and moving place. Meals will be vegetarian, organic and local as much as possible.
Note
We will not have electricity, so you can only come with acoustic instruments.
A warm welcome to join us in this exploration!
Price
330 € to cover the cost of camping, the workspace and delicious food as organic as possible…
Teachings and organization are on donation.

Shifting states of being and embracing the mystery of change,
an international improvisational dance & performance excursion:
Capadoccia Turkey
- With Lauren Tietz and assisted by Turkish organizer Mevlut ERK
Join us for a week of dance practice and performance in Middle Anatolia/Turkey. Sourcing the unique landscape of Capadoccia we will work inside and outdoors. Open spaces, underground cities, rivers, caves, a volcanic lake, Ihlara valley, Erciyes mountain and ancient mystical sites will be our inspiration for dance explorations and performance.
The Workshop: Shape Shifting
Tuning into our unique intelligence and thirst for movement we will practice sensing deeply into dance in order to tap personal choices that feel sustainable, authentic, peaceful, exciting, surprising. Drawing on principles arising from Contact Improvisation, martial arts, meditation, authentic movement practice, body work and compositional studies – we will practice and perform in different daily locations.
We will use CI, Qi Gong, partner body work, authentic movement and other modalities that lead us into dancing in our morning practice. Following a mid-day break we will come together again to delve more deeply into explorations of land-inspired dance, contact duets, group scores and witnessing. Our work will culminate in the form of performance at the end of the week.
With our eyes on shape shifting we will tune into the notion of adaptability – a keystone in improvisation and a state on which resiliency, transition and transcendence all hinge. When do shifts happen instantaneously? Glacially? Sequentially? Shifts are physical, physiological, neurochemical, emotional. To be in transit, to transition from one state to another – of course, we are never really in a static place of having arrived. No sooner than we think we have ‘arrived,’ we are again changing, adapting. Are we perhaps always in a state of arriving, of becoming? How can we embrace this state of becoming with safety, curiosity, excitement?
Seeing and being seen, we will practice engaging our playfulness within the dance, with rigor, open heartedness and love so that the act of performing may feel like a generous act, revealing the essential vulnerability and beauty of who we are.

Instantaneous Movement Creation &
Performance Skills
Workshop with Shahar Dor and Guy Aloni
Improvising is giving a creative answer to an unknown,
sometimes unpredictable situation. We use our senses to
see, hear and feel the moment, and the knowledge of our
body and mind to response.
When we bring the improvisation as a movement art to the
stage, the key is to find this deep connection between our
inner-world and perception and between the audience,
using the flexible limit between ourselves and the
environment in order to project and transmit the essence
of what we are doing.
In this workshop we will explore the connection between
introjection, action and narrative.
Through practice of Contact Improvisation, principles of
Aikido and the tools of the performing artist we will aim to
enrich our personal vocabulary and resources for the
improvisation.
Price: 485 euros
- Price include sleeping and meals from September 1st (morning) till
September 6th (morning). We offer a reduced price without meals/sleeping
for those who are interesetd.
This class features guided warm-ups, fundamental exercises and skills, improvisational scores and structures, solo/group/ensemble composition and time for open dancing/jamming. Contact improvisation will be a common element in our palette, but we will also weave many other threads into the fabric of our evenings as well. This is a mixed level class open to drop-ins, appropriate for experienced dancers, but also very beginner friendly, with plenty of grins and giggles!
$15 Drop-in, $12 per class for 4-8 wk multi-class packages, $140 for 14 all weeks *Alternative weekly/monthly payment arrangements may be possible with consent of the teacher.

Mind the Point is a week long research and exploration event focusing on the topics of
awareness and consciousness within the practice of Contact
Improvisation.
This study event focuses on how our practice of Contact Improvisation
shapes and changes the ways we perceive ourselves, others and the
world around. We are interested in naming, framing, and bringing
awareness to the values we gain when practicing this particular
movement form, but also strengthening the bridge between the practice
and everyday life.
We encourage exploration, engagement, sharing, discussion and learning together while discovering CI in its fuller understanding and
existence.
Please note that the experience is open for a limited group of
participants. Registration opens on August 13th!

“We will concentrate on serenity, listening deeply to the dance that emerges from our interior, from our peers, and between the both. We will explore, from this expressive flow of the body, technical aspects of CI, keeping sensibility, freedom and humour at all times”. Contact Improvisation will be the common ground to continue and deepen our skills to come into a physical and kinaesthetic dialogue with others. We will play with different scores for improvisation to challenge and sharpen our compositional and spatial awareness. Articulation and playfulness are two keywords for this workshop in which we will dance a lot for and with each other. Dances in which we can expect to be in physical contact at any moment and at the same time keeping an awareness of ones own direction in improvising. This workshop will provide a playground for those who are interested in exploring territories in which we use our creative potential in dances that are created in the here and now, the present moment of an improvisation.

Improvisational Contact Dance As High End Therapy, Workshop with Stuart Phillips, Saturday November 10th 1-4pm-Sunday November 11th 1-4pm —Dancing People Studio 310 Oak Street, Ashland Oregon
Contact Improvisation consists of two very essential words, the first has become perfected, the second fossilized. In our quest to study contact improvisation, we have become acrobatic with less emphasis on meaning, heart, and soul purpose, so in this exciting 2-day workshop, we study our way into perfect improvisational dance as an approach to interpersonal dynamics, perfected in the height of expression. We learn to become more comfortable with our own personal expressive tendencies in the moment, not as a pattern of nonsensical athletics, but rather as rooted expression of what’s really going on for us intrinsically inside our selves, in the very moment honing our outer expression of inner impulses bypassing mental patterning, into the wonderful world of truth, as it is known in the unknown, revealed and built upon moment to moment, with focus and acceptance. Our focus is complete depatterning with emphasis upon real self, moving from personal reality and not concepts, without interruption, with clean approach and aligned focus, true expression. This methodical approach consists of simple psychic group guidance, clean physical, mental or emotional foci unblocking patterned no nos into cleaner expression of focus, with solo time honing this true alignment with self, moving into being real in relationship with other and self, as duet, trio, quartet, quintet, etc., so personal truth becomes the only excitement, the method of approach to dance Improvisationally. It always works, eventually, and it will be impossible to disconnect from our true physical and emotional flows, with an observant and supportive mental approach enhancing visible-izing our truth to our selves, an enlivening personal experience, transforming into deeper pathways from self into manifested Dance.
Stuart Phillips has been teaching workshops, classes and series in Improvisational Contact Dance around the US, Canada and New Zealand for over 25 years, performing Improvisational Contact for same and teaching and performing Improvisational Dance and Theater for over 31 years throughout.

Bodysurf Scotland is proud to present Brand New 12/13, the 10th of its now legendary new year dance events. This year’s event focuses on the dance form Contact Improvisation and is hosted by CI dancers and teachers Karl Jay-Lewin, Robert Anderson and Jovair Longo. It takes the form of a Jam – an unstructured time for dancing together – and is open to both beginners and experienced dancers. There will be led warm ups and optional movement classes to join outside of the event – not to mention a Hogmany party, hot tub, new year’s day ‘polar bear swim’, walking on the beach and time for relaxing.
The venue for the Jam is the magnificent Universal Hall Arts Centre in the Findhorn EcoVillage Community, NE Scotland. The Hall houses two dance spaces, a café and hot tub.
Accommodation: Self catering B&B chalets from £27 per night. Low cost shared rooms in homes of local dancers may be available, as well as local B&Bs. Enquire for details.
