Katie Duck has been investigating theater, dance and music with live performance for over 30 years. In her workshop, she takes a microscopic view on the role improvisation plays in a live performance combining her background in the performing arts with her curiosity for advances in brain studies, music and movement research. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

WHO COULD ATTEND?
Katie can accept students from all performance art backgrounds and professional levels. Her only concern is that anyone who studies in her workshop have a deep interest in the work and is willing to experiment and take risks with the material she offers.

WHAT YOU LEARN?
Improvisational performance breaks the framework of preset choreography and challenges the artist to be the creator/composer/choreographer and the performer at the same time; to be the doer and the observer simultaneously. It is about learning ‘The Eye’: of the space, of the watcher and essentially the eye of work being created.

The workshop is oriented towards building skills of performance presence, timing, tracking and conviction of choice/action. It focuses on developing skills to interpret dynamic space and creating one’s own performance frame. While Katie aims to explore novel and rigorous approaches to body work. The main focus lies in reaching a state of surprising oneself. The workshop will be structured into body work, activity-based sessions, performances and a jam.

Her warm-up and exercises emphasis how the eyes and the ears work in coordination with movement, sound and exposure to gathered crowds altering our perception of time, space, feelings and emotions. Improvisation sessions revolve around the terms pause, flow, exit, choice and presence with discussions articulating play, memory and intuition.

Katie guides the dancers and performers through physical exercises that highlight how the eyes and ears affect movement choices and developmental brain studies about “how we learned to walk”. She extends the workshop toward improvisation sessions by setting a fictional front in the studio space and then declaring this as a platform to choose pause, flow or exit. This platform highlights how the limit of these three choices can already provide the frame for a composition to take place, and that misunderstanding, coincidence, live time, interactivity, messiness, emotions, intuition and inspiration are basic materials in a creative process. These raw materials are integrated with the combined fact that everyone in the workshop group can make a choice.

WORKSHOP SETTING:
Choice is introduced to the workshop group as a compositional reality but also as a means for individuals to elect to participate in the performative or as a viewer and yet remain involved in the process. The aim is to gather the workshop group to recognize that in a creative composition process, time is passing at different perceived speeds and that space is shifting in several dimensions at once. This awareness creates a presence in the space and a compositional alertness.

Her aim is to provide a situation where artists can practice together and grow in confidence toward public performances with an objective to clarify that improvisation not the antitheses of choreography or composition but rather the way choreography and composition can be executed.

The improvisation sessions are given a delegated time frame with an option for the workshop group to shift, drop or lift the space at will. This shifting, dropping and lifting of the performance space places each individual in a position where they need to be to be fully awake or they will recognisably loose the thread of the creative compositional activity in play.

HOW KATIE TEACHS?
Katie has been teaching since she began to perform professionally in the mid 70’s. She is dedicated to how process and research play a major role in how one can continue to be artistic in how they approach their life and their work.

Over the past 10 years her workshops have been titled “Improvisation” in order to emphasis her views on theater as a live art form reflective of how she executes her own professional performances. Her research is placed in practice with lectures containing her recent interest in brain studies and film.

She integrates her current research making each workshop completely unique. She draws from her experiences in live performances, music collaborations, as a director and choreographer.

Her enthusiasm for a young artists to be able to continue their practice, in a very different atmosphere than when she began her work, is evident in how she has continued to up grade her life style with new technologies, continued to do research in the sciences, the performance arts and music. She has created several projects with an aim to support a young artists rather than her own career. She continues to take risks with her own career in the support of young artists giving them the possibility to experiment within their own practice.
She promotes to her students that the mental connection to the practice of improvisation can be accessed weather they are doing set or open framed performance pieces and that the definitions of what improvisation within art practices mean today need to be reflective to advances in brain-studies and technology.

In the way she communicates with students, one is aware of how she understands that the professional field of the arts has altered drastically in comparison to when she began her practice in the mid 70’s. As part of her teaching, she encourages young artists to devise strategies that allow for them to sustain the production of their work with creativity and research involved and yet survive.

RESEARCH MATERIAL:
Katie has had the possibility to create material for her workshops out of a wide range of practice in the performance arts. She has never formulated her teaching material into a frozen body of knowledge. She does not believe that the accumulation of knowledge is how one becomes a teacher. She believes that It is out of her practice and the practice she witnesses with a student that all knowledge becomes clarified in the lessons she leading.

BIO KATIE DUCK:
Katie Duck is a director/performer/teacher who has been working professionally since 1976. She has dedicated her life to her work as an on going process rather than settle into one specific methodology or frame. She is working in the context of the time she is living in day to day. Her work is the voice for how she feels about that. Katie Duck is a feminist with an edge to move things along rather than look behind.

By the 1980’s, Katie began to take a microscopic study for the role improvisation plays in her real time composition integrating music, movement, object and writing. Improvisation in a Katie Duck performance is not the antithesis of choreography or composition; it is how she makes her art work out of practice both in the studio setting and the newness of real time improvised performance. Her performances are about the experience of being there, you are participating in the event and thus, in a sense, the work”. Katie Duck’s practice is a reflection of what she believes art in the theatre can only be; live.

She has developed a manifesto in how she conducts research, rehearsal processes, and workshops towards performances based on her background working with live musicians beginning in the mid 70’s and her obsession to write and then voice text in a mix with her musical background. Over the past 15 years, she has integrated her curiosity for developmental brain studies as a part of how she teaches movement research and how she works with live public. Public, in her performances, are witnesses and the main provider for how the piece is perceived.

Her performances are a practice of presence in a sound driven space with a flirtation to engage public so hopefully they remember what they have seen, heard and felt long after the live performance has died.

Retreat Description:

PROJECTS IN MOTION is an ongoing collaboration between Ruth Douthwright and Erin Godfrey – a platform for movement research, education and artistic practice.

Acknowledging the moving body as living landscape requires adaptation and innovation when applying movement principles. Functional movement necessitates a creative approach in practice in order to respect individual physicality and diverse training aims.

Erin and Ruth are informed by many movement modalities with a shared interest in experiential and theoretical research for functional dynamics applied to dancing, sports, yoga, fitness and everyday pedestrian practices of walking, sitting, standing etc.

Arrive on Thursday, May3rd on either the 230 or 530 ferries from French Creek. You will be met with a limo and brought to the studio.

Class Descriptions

Axis Syllabus (Ruth)

This practice uses spirals, undulations and looping movement cycles, applied and practiced through dance and athleticism. The objective is to propose practical methods for moving dynamically while developing coordinated movement reactions. Rather than centering on aesthetic choices, it asks the question: how can we support, move with and listen to the moving body?

Movement Essentials (Erin)

Mostly, we practice slow movements for improving co-ordination, alignment, strength and awareness. Speed and improvisation are thoughtfully and progressively included as opportunities to work with alignment habits and reflexes. The movement patterns I teach are developed over years, are informed by my various trainings/research/teaching, and are always evolving.

Projects in Motion (Ruth & Erin)

In this workshop we will investigate principles of movement found in rolling, crawling, standing, walking and dancing. Utilizing creative practices in listening, sensitivity, and innovation to improve and refine alignment for dynamic movement situations. You can expect guided improvisation, repeating loops and bits of phrase work.

Dancing Folk (Ruth)

In this workshop we will practice a wide range of rhythms, steps, gestures and spatial formations bridging stories of origin and folklore to the intention and motivation of the dances. Created and re-created by and for folks who love to dance, these dances continue to evolve, blurring the lines between traditional and contemporary. This class is a lovely way to be in community, simply dancing together while practicing functional coordinations, kinetic rhythmic forces and dynamic efficiency.

CI (Erin)

Contact Improvisation is a social dance in which momentum between people is used to create and inspire dance movements. Focus will be placed upon using kinetic chains and tri-axial movements to play with momentum.

Biographies

Ruth Douthwright is a dance artist and movement educator. For over a decade Ruth has been a teacher of the Axis Syllabus, offering individual and group movement workshops and dance trainings, and is a guest teacher in Dance and Movement Research Projects internationally. She is a graduate from École de danse contemporaine de Montréal, with parallel studies in Body Mind Centering, Continuum and Voice. Continued studies include Laban UK, Min Tanaka, The Body Weather Farm and Noh Theatre – Kyoto Arts Centre. Ongoing research and performance projects with Ecological Bodying – Kevin O’Connor. Ruth is a London Artist in Residence working as an educator and mentor and performs with PDA.

Erin Godfrey is a movement educator, speaker and researcher. She began her career as a ballet dancer, studying with the National Ballet School of Canada, followed by studies in Anatomy and Kinesiology at George Brown College. Erin has owned several studios in Toronto and has been teaching movement and healthful living practices for over 17 years. Erin’s work is informed by her research of the human body as a natural system for movement. Specializing in injury recovery and movement training for health, performance and everyday life. Offering perspectives in body wellness, Erin works with a wide range of students, including those with serious injuries, chronic conditions, new mothers, seniors, dancers and elite athletes. Additional studies include, Meditation, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, Developmental Movement, Pilates, Personal Training, Wellness Coaching, Anatomy Trains, Contact Improvisation and Axis Syllabus.

Arrive on Sunday May13 to be picked up from the ferry by a limousine, brought to the studio for dinner rest. Class begins on Monday morning. The final jam is Friday, May25th with departure after breakfast on Saturday at 10am, the ferry leaves at 11.

This workshop has become the signature of Leviathan. It is tried, tested and proven to work. Participants of past workshops have expressed surprise at their development by the third day and are amazed that they continue to improve as CI dancers throughout the 12 days. Some participants have done this workshop 5 times. In 2017 it was offered as a 19day workshop. Several participants asked that it be made longer.

We will start with Tai Chi exercises that emphasize the spiral nature of our physiology. Everything from the DNA to the milky way is spiraling. All of our muscles are laid on bones that are shaped in spirals. The ancient Taoist masters recognized this and developed movement patterns that harness strength and ease in movement.

We will bridge from Taoist Tai Chi to Steve Paxton’s ‘Material For the Spine.’ MFS includes spiral rolls, crescent rolls and Aikido rolls. These exercises are done alone on the floor. They inform the body of unnecessary tension. They bring awareness to blind spots. The bring consciousness to our dance.

We will bridge from floor work to partner work using these rolls to find smooth pathways with a partner. Exploring the concept that ‘lifts are organic’ we will let our feet come off the floor on our terms, when we want. Lifts and aerials in Contact Improv are not contrived like other dance forms. They happen because someone made a mistake; someone’s centre of gravity went below their partners’. We will play with this gentle riding up to slide down to roll up.

This workshop is the ‘essential’ Contact Improv. You can take these exercises with y0u and practice them for the rest of your life. They take more than two weeks to really know them, imprint them in your muscle-memory. Come back next year for a refresher.

Mark Young has been doing Contact Improvisation since 1997. What began as fun re-hab after a traumatic accident quickly became a serious study. He also began a serious study of Tai Chi and Vipassana meditation around the same time, these are the foundations of Contact Improvisation. He has studied C.I. with everyone who has come to the studio, many people outside of the studio and attended numerous conferences with the originators of the form at Breitenbush Hot Springs retreat centre. Also, he has attended numerous Contact Improv jams at Earthdance retreat centre in Massachusetts over the past 15 years. In 2000 he committed all of his resources to the creation of Leviathan Studio, a dance studio committed to the study of Contact Improvisation.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION – The Flying Score:

Starting with contact as our foundation, we’ll traject towards a space that supports freedom of flight and expression: expression that takes us into interaction and ensemble improvisation. That is: we start at zero to redefine what is contact—to ourselves, others, reality, gravity. We start at zero to connect with our bodies, our interest and spontaneity.

Some notions: We will decode momentum to ride moving support — riding momentum is about letting go without being out-of–control. We’ll track flying centers of gravity to find aerial interactions that increase the contact.
I like to inject some body systems material (BMC, Alexander Technique and bodywork). For example: Jumping ≠ Flying because jumping is a muscular action, whereas flying is in the bones and is affected greatly by emotions and attitude.

Some of the techniques that will be tought are: ‘flying patterns’ (lifts, how to spring, how to jump, how to fly), ‘fluid acrobatics’ (actobatics in movement), ‘pure contact’(contact improvisation basics). For the acrobatic and advanced patterns everyone will work at their own level and will learn best by building group safety and trust – everyone will do something new. We will learn some repertory and practice taking the aerial work into improv. I like feedback and will see what the group is up for.

We will practice flying, catching, landing, fluid acrobatics and deft maneuvers. We’ll be doing my favorite contact exercises and current curiosities—created or learned over the decades of investigation and indulgence. We use these to warm up, center and to re-enter the “beginner’s mind” of contact improvisation. We will practice integrating the flying and acrobatics into the contact flow. That is: aerial interactions that increase the contact. We will take the aerial work into improvisation FLYING SCORES.

BIO Scott Wells:

In 1981 Scott Wells discovered the pleasure of contact improvisation shortly after becoming obsessed with the struggles of modern dance. He stuck with both, received an MFA in dance from the University of Illinois (1991) and currently directs a company in San Francisco. Scott Wells & Dancers is celebrating 25 years of making dances in San Francisco. Wells has created works for skateboarders, for boxers and choreographed West Side Story for Sonoma State University. In 2010 and 2005 Scott received the Izzie (San Francisco’s most prestigious dance award) for Outstanding Choreography and was selected by Dance Magazine as “one of the 25 To Watch”. In 2016 Wells choreographed Touchy Subjects with Keith Hennessy and in 2017 choreographed On the Occasion of our 25th Anniversary (and eviction) we ask, “Was that good for you?” with Kathleen Hermesdorf. Wells has been practicing Alexander Technique for twenty five years and BMC for fifteen.
Scott’s style of contact is athletic and emphasizes freedom of movement, flying, fluid acrobatics (easy to advanced), safety, precision, pleasure and technique. What students often like best in Scott’s classes is the variance between meditative, playful, and very physical dancing. And students appreciate how the scary or advanced moves are safe, relaxed and made possible.

Arrive on Sunday June10 to be picked up from the ferry by a limousine, brought to the studio for dinner rest. Class begins on Monday morning. The final jam is Friday, June22 with departure after breakfast at 10am, the ferry leaves at 11.

This workshop has become the signature of Leviathan. It is tried, tested and proven to work. Participants of past workshops have expressed surprise at their development by the third day and are amazed that they continue to improve as CI dancers throughout the 12 days. Some participants have done this workshop 5 times. In 2017 it was offered as a 19day workshop. Several participants asked that it be made longer.

We will start with Tai Chi exercises that emphasize the spiral nature of our physiology. Everything from the DNA to the milky way is spiraling. All of our muscles are laid on bones that are shaped in spirals. The ancient Taoist masters recognized this and developed movement patterns that harness strength and ease in movement.

We will bridge from Taoist Tai Chi to Steve Paxton’s ‘Material For the Spine.’ MFS includes spiral rolls, crescent rolls and Aikido rolls. These exercises are done alone on the floor. They inform the body of unnecessary tension. They bring awareness to blind spots. They bring consciousness to our dance.

We will bridge from floor work to partner work using these rolls to find smooth pathways with a partner. Exploring the concept that ‘lifts are organic’ we will let our feet come off the floor on our terms, when we want. Lifts and aerials in Contact Improv are not contrived like other dance forms. They happen because someone made a mistake; someone’s centre of gravity went below their partners’. We will play with this gentle riding up to slide down to roll up.

This workshop is the ‘essential’ Contact Improv. You can take these exercises with y0u and practice them for the rest of your life. They take more than two weeks to really know them, imprint them in your muscle-memory. Come back next year for a refresher.

Mark Young has been doing Contact Improvisation since 1997. What began as fun re-hab after a traumatic accident quickly became a serious study. He also began a serious study of Tai Chi and Vipassana meditation around the same time, these are the foundations of Contact Improvisation. He has studied C.I. with everyone who has come to the studio, many people outside of the studio and attended numerous conferences with the originators of the form at Breitenbush Hot Springs retreat centre. Also, he has attended numerous Contact Improv jams at Earthdance retreat centre in Massachusetts over the past 15 years. Main question in this workshop is choice making in contact improvisation. What kind of choices I make when I dance? What is my inner landscape? How do I connect with somatic presence, environment and nature while I dance?
Once we start exploring our questions about the choice making, we then can look at how this applies to our values in contact improvisation.Are we allowing the other person to see our bodily environments and our inner landscapes? There is a preference for participants doing the entire 6weeks. For those wishing to do the entire residency, the total fee is $3000 if you register by May1st.

This 6week Residency is a result of the things that worked in the 19day workshop in July’17 and the 19day Residency in Aug’17. It is a combination of what worked from the two events last year; the things that were asked for more.

There will be daily morning class of 2 hours. This class is lead by Mark Young in the foundations of Contact Improv with all the basic skills that we need to do good CI including spiral rolls, crescent rolls, aikido rolls, the small dance and all that leads us to aerials. There will be a morning Tai Chi session prior to the 2 hour class.

Participants at Leviathan have become accustomed to the 4hour lunch break. Experience has shown the wisdom of this practice. There is no rush to leave the floor when the morning class ends. There is no rush to eat. Food is abundant. Some people like to meditate for an hour, there will be a group sit in the studio 2:30-3:30. Some like to get in the ocean during the lunch break. I like to nap before the one hour sit. We will maintain the 4 hour lunch break throughout this 6week adventure.

The afternoon session is for group lab work. With the guidance of co-facilitators, Olivia Shaffer and Kyle Syverson (bios below) we will delve into the questions and curiosities of participants as they relate to Contact Improv. This is an opportunity for participants to raise their questions, explore their limitations with the support of the group.

We will have the input of various guest teachers who will lead us through short workshops. Karen Nelson will lead us through material of her choosing; material that is her present day intrigue after decades of inquiry.

Although registration is on a week-to-week basis, some weeks require that you participate in the previous week. There is a preference for people who register for the whole residency. We want people from the beginning to bond with the group. Of course, not everyone has the time to devote 6 weeks to this project. Some will leave early and others will start late.

Session 1: July22-28- Tai Chi, spiral/crescent/aikido rolls. If you don’t know these rolls, then now is a good time to start the Residency. We will continue to practice them throughout the Residency but this week will be devoted to in depth study.

Session 2: July29-Aug4- Going deeper with the work. Same as session 1, but more. All these things take time, more than a week, and they benefit anyone at any level. You will become softer and stronger with more tone. Your dancing will be noticeably improved by this time. There will be an emphasis on jams as we assimilate the work and prepare for Alicia’s workshop.

Session 3: Aug5-11– We will start the week (MTWT) with Alicia Grayson (see workshop below) leading us through a 4 day workshop. You must do session 2 to do session 3. We want to present a solid group of dancers to when she arrives. It takes a few days just to get unwound from the city never mind grounded in the daily rigours of 3 sessions daily. After this workshop, we will return to the schedule of morning class with Mark and afternoon labs with Olivia and Kyle. Friday will be a day of rest.

Session 4: Aug12-18- We will continue with the 2hour conditioning class in the morning with Mark and afternoon lab sessions with Olivia and Kyle. Last year, at the end of the 19day workshop there was a sense that we were just getting going and there was a strong request for a 4th week to just assimilate the material. Further down the rabbit hole we go with 24h jam/silent day and walking backwards exercises.

Session 5: Aug19-25 You must do session 4 to participate in session 5. Karen Nelson will start the week with 4days of Tuning Scores. See below for class description and bio. Friday will be a day of rest and on Saturday we will return to the morning conditioning class and afternoon lab sessions. By this time, the evening jams will be magical with a base group of participants who have been working together for four weeks.

Session 6: Aug26-Sept1- Assimilation: From past experience, time is requested for assimilation of all that we have learned. No new material will be presented just continued exploration. Consider a morning session of Tai Chi leading to a jam. The afternoon session may start with a long practice of walking backwards. Walking backwards through the forest develops awareness of what is behind you. With a soft and subtle body, and heightened awareness through meditation, with a group of participants that has gelled over time, we will do what we love most, jam. This week could also be titled, ‘Advanced.’ No new participants will join this week.

Alicia Grayson’s workshop: CI Principles: From the Ground Up, A Journey through the Chakras: Each session we will focus on one of the 7 major chakras as a lens through which we build solo and partnering skills that support contact improvisation. Working from the ground up we expand our abilities to listen to ourselves and our partners so that the flow of life energy can move effortlessly through us as we improvise in contact. The following themes gleaned from the 7 major chakras will weave their way into the workshop: Earth: creating and deepening a felt sense of safety, refining one’s ability to listen and respond though touch, continuously sensing the ground through own and partner’s body, integrating feet and legs to pelvic floor and spine. Water: accessing the power and fluidity of the pelvis and integrating it with rest of the body as co-create with partner, continuity of the rolling point of contact, moving with embodied pleasure, navigating healthy boundaries, using momentum to create more ease in dancing, intentionally going off balance to create opportunities for the joy of falling and flying. Fire: moving from own center (the source of life energy) and connecting to partner’s, delighting in and deepening one’s solo dance while dancing with partner, exploring the organs of liver, stomach and kidneys as support for empowered dancing Air: expanding the awareness of the lungs and breath as well as the arms and hands and their relationship to the heart, developing strategies for creating lightness in the body, allowing the spectrum of heart qualities to dance us. Sound and vibration: freeing up the neck, throat and jaw as a means to open self expression while we move, integrating the head and torso though the pathway of the digestive tube, refining the ability to work with spherical space and inversions.Light and perception: using the physical eyes and imagination to give more depth in our perception, inviting the eyes to be the steering wheel for the spine, closing the eyes and opening to deeper levels of sensation and visualization so our inner world dances us.Opening to the Source or the Mystery: opening oneself to the creative unknown, navigating the head as a limb, integrating all parts of the body, mind and spirit so that the improvisation flows freely. We practice these skills in an environment that honors our physical, emotional and mental boundaries…and invites their expansion. In contact improvisation we discover the magic that happens as we play with our creative minds and hearts and the physics of two (or more) bodies in motion.

Alicia Grayson has been passionately involved with dancing, teaching and performing CI for the past 30 years. She has taught contact improvisation as an adjunct faculty at George Washington University, University of Denver, Naropa University and Shenandoah University. She teaches CI, yoga and pilates classes in Colorado and regularly travels nationally and internationally to teach. Her long time practices of authentic movement, yoga and meditation, her work as a somatic psychotherapist and transformational coach and her love of nature are important influences on her dancing and teaching. She delights in exploring and discovering new depths to contact improvisation and related disciplines and is particularly interested in the intersection of physics and expression and the mind/body relationship.

Karen Nelson’s 40-year dance and performance practice has been influenced by mentor/collaborator’s Steve Paxton and Lisa Nelson’s, Material for the Spine, Contact, and Tuning Scores (respectively), and with many others around the world. A dancer/choreographer, performer, teacher and organizer, Karen co-founded Joint Forces Dance Co, Breitenbush Jam, Dance Ability, Diverse Dance Research Retreat, and the performance group Image Lab, among other projects.

Image Lab intensively developed Tuning Scores together for nearly a decade in the 1990s, and autonomously in current collaborations. They performed Tuning Scores Observatories in the US, Europe and Asia. A regular guest teacher at the Schools for New Dance Development in Amsterdam and Arnhem, Karen made numerous teaching visits including Bates Festival, Movement Research and Festivals in South America. She’s received awards from National Endowment for the Arts, Oregon Arts Commission, National Performance Network, Wild Woods Foundation, Vashon Allied Arts, NW New Works.

Karen’s workshop will emphasize ‘Tuning Scores’ dynamic inter-dancing. Our dancing body is a playground of investigation. Our senses are the detectives. Our awareness and imagination employ physicality to embody and reveal composition in relation to our environment and each other. Stillness, continuous movement, engagement of skin, muscle, skeleton, and particularly the eyes: how they move, how they move us, how we can see and make compositional choices with our eyes closed. How witnessing is dancing. This is the tip of a large body of work. Your body, your work. Scores are games with guidelines that help the players communicate with each other. A language gets made between the players that can make sense, and meaning within a dance shared together can unfold.

Olivia Shaffer is an independent performer, improviser, choreographer and teacher from Vancouver, BC. She holds a BFA and a Liberal Arts Certificate from the School for Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. She works as a freelance dance artist with several Vancouver-based companies such as EDAM Dance, Co.ERASGA, MACHiNENOiSY and Raven Spirit Dance, among others. Since 2011, Olivia has had the pleasure and privilege of developing her skills under the guidance of two mentors: CI master Peter Bingham and somatic movement expert Helen Walkley. Olivia trains daily with Peter and his renown dance company EDAM, and has an ongoing rapport with Helen as a devoted student and artistic collaborator.

Olivia has participated in numerous CI intensives with notables such as Andrew Harwood, Ray Chung and Frey Faust. She has taught in North America and Southeast Asia, and has been performing with Vancouver-based CI company EDAM Dance since 2014.

www.oliviashaffer.ca Olivia’s approach to Contact Improvisation (CI) is rooted in cultivating an awareness of our body’s physical sensations and an embodied tuning to the present moment. Classes will incorporate solo movement investigations and hands-on partner work. Principles such as yielding, head-tail connection, and push patterns will be explored to enrich our dancing in contact with others. These explorations will help us integrate the interconnections of our limbs and notice unnecessary tension in our bodies. We will examine pathways that allow us to move in and out of the floor with ease and efficiency. As we begin to dance together we will discover the innate physics in our movements. Gravity can become a tool rather than a hindrance. By learning to gently pour the weight of our body into others, we will notice how timing can allow for effortless movements. Similarly, we will explore how we can make ourselves light and supportive in surrendering to weight flow and counterbalance. Olivia’s classes offer an opportunity to develop CI techniques that will both foster the dancing of beginners and satisfy the hunger of more advanced practitioners.

Kyle Syverson is a passionate student, practitioner, and teacher of Contact Improvisation. After years of competitive gymnastics and ballet, Kyle (thankfully!) found her way to modern dance and Contact Improv. Kyle resides in Saskatoon, teaching CI sessions at the University of Saskatchewan and in the community. She has been influenced by MANY generous and inspiring teachers, including: Nancy Stark Smith, Martin Keogh, Daniella Schwartz and Eckhart Mueller, Yves Candau, Ray Chung, Katarina Eriksson. Every body, every dance is a teacher though and that is part of the fascination of Contact Improvisation for Kyle. She loves the range and inclusivity of Contact- from slow and subtle dances to high stakes adrenaline

Kyle endeavours to teach individual pathways of softness and support, athleticism and listening. Kyle is interested in exploring the infinite possibilities of connection with other sensing bodies. Who do we connect with? How? When? How do we create/transform states, together? How can we deeply listen to ourselves, another body, the moment? …how can we become more comfortable with the unknown, with ‘disorientation’, with inversion?! For Kyle, Contact Improv is art, sport and meditation.

Other activities that a participant can expect to see in labs are the ‘Jumper-catcher’ exercises that quicken the reflexes and soften the reactions. Silent Day has proven very beneficial in cultivating awareness. We will do a 24hour-silent-jam, perhaps more than once.

Arrive on Sunday June10 to be picked up from the ferry by a limousine, brought to the studio for dinner rest. Class begins on Monday morning. The final jam is Friday, June22 with departure after breakfast at 10am, the ferry leaves at 11.

This workshop has become the signature of Leviathan. It is tried, tested and proven to work. Participants of past workshops have expressed surprise at their development by the third day and are amazed that they continue to improve as CI dancers throughout the 12 days. Some participants have done this workshop 5 times. In 2017 it was offered as a 19day workshop. Several participants asked that it be made longer.

We will start with Tai Chi exercises that emphasize the spiral nature of our physiology. Everything from the DNA to the milky way is spiraling. All of our muscles are laid on bones that are shaped in spirals. The ancient Taoist masters recognized this and developed movement patterns that harness strength and ease in movement.

We will bridge from Taoist Tai Chi to Steve Paxton’s ‘Material For the Spine.’ MFS includes spiral rolls, crescent rolls and Aikido rolls. These exercises are done alone on the floor. They inform the body of unnecessary tension. They bring awareness to blind spots. They bring consciousness to our dance.

We will bridge from floor work to partner work using these rolls to find smooth pathways with a partner. Exploring the concept that ‘lifts are organic’ we will let our feet come off the floor on our terms, when we want. Lifts and aerials in Contact Improv are not contrived like other dance forms. They happen because someone made a mistake; someone’s centre of gravity went below their partners’. We will play with this gentle riding up to slide down to roll up.

This workshop is the ‘essential’ Contact Improv. You can take these exercises with y0u and practice them for the rest of your life. They take more than two weeks to really know them, imprint them in your muscle-memory. Come back next year for a refresher.

Mark Young has been doing Contact Improvisation since 1997. What began as fun re-hab after a traumatic accident quickly became a serious study. He also began a serious study of Tai Chi and Vipassana meditation around the same time, these are the foundations of Contact Improvisation. He has studied C.I. with everyone who has come to the studio, many people outside of the studio and attended numerous conferences with the originators of the form at Breitenbush Hot Springs retreat centre. Also, he has attended numerous Contact Improv jams at Earthdance retreat centre in Massachusetts over the past 15 years. In 2000 he committed all of his resources to the creation of Leviathan Studio, a dance studio committed to the study of Contact Improvisation.

$1200 Canadian includes all meals, tuition, taxes, camping, dormitory, limo ride from the ferry and then returned at the end of the workshop.
