- Contact Improvisation is a moving massage, a dance that fine tunes your senses and wakes up your ability to listen and respond to what is happening in the moment. The classes will be aimed at people with a broad range of movement abilities, backgrounds and bodies. Participants will work solo, in duos and in groups. Completely curious beginners as well as trained dancers are welcome. The aim of the classes is to make participants feel more fully engaged with their bodies, with their minds and with each other. It will be a fun and safe place to explore motion, dance, touch and your imagination. It can be used as a process for finding new movement ideas, opening yourself up creatively, gaining confidence in your body or purely as enjoyment.
Jonathan Katz has a richly diverse background as a performer, director and teacher. He has extensive training in physically devised theatre, Capoeira, Feldenkrais, Yoga, Improvisation and Psychology.

This class begins with a centering and deepening exercise and moves toward specific contact tools incorporating complementary performance elements, examining how to make clear choices to find fulfillment in each dance. We will explore our multidimensional body: an eternal stillness, the desire to be airborne, to give support and feel supported, enter or exit a dance, flow with momentum, or use resistance to redirect and create dynamic/unexpected interactions. Over the course of each semester we will cover the fundamentals of rolling, spiraling, sliding, contouring, balancing, the efficient use of weight and working intelligently with gravity and our body alignment. We will also cover light touch to full weight, falling into the backspace, the brilliance of simplicity, degrees of release and tensegrity, from near-space to far-space, from the body’s architecture to the architecture of the space. We will practice extending our range and flexibility, finding our joy in the dance and giving greater dimension and emotional authenticity to our contact improvisation..

- Madison Jam The Madison Contact Improvisation Jam meets twice a week:
- Our "facilitated" Jam meets on Sundays from 4:00-6:00 pm at Jewel in the Lotus Yoga studio, 821 E. Johnson St. on Madison's near east side. Punctual arrival is important. Cost = $5. This jam includes an opening circle "check in", facilitated warm-up, and facilitated instruction on topics such as weight sharing, lifting, safe falling, perception, fluid dancing, etc. Those who are new to contact improvisation are encouraged to attend the Sunday Jam to learn basics of the form.
Our "open" Jam meets on Wednesday nights 7:30-9:30 at Main Street Yoga, 1882 E. Main Street, just off First Street between E. Washington and Winnebago. Cost = $5. This Jam has a very open format. Participants are responsible for their own warm-up and cool-down, and for entering and exiting dances as they wish.
