Ongoing Jams/Classes — local classes and jams – "regularly scheduled dancing"
Barepaws Dance Collective
Inner Dance Yoga Studio, 2610 Spenard Road, Anchorage, AK 99517 USA

We rotate through a menu of barefoot, improvisational dance practices each month including: open sound/movement improvisation, contact improvisation, inner state focused dance (contemplative dance, kundalini dance, ecstatic dance, authentic movement), and a barefoot boogie. Contact improvisation practice is welcome at all events, all weeks— there’s a guided warm up and mini-lesson on CI weeks.

$10-12 drop in or collective dues for 6 weeks $30-42 (you pay to support everyone’s dancing at a reduced rate, you pay for a 6 week stretch whether you show up to dance or not)

Sunday evenings 7-9pm Sept-May. double check whether we are dancing during the warm, bright months (May-August). Check with the contact person to find where we are in the rotation

Dark Dance is contact dance with blindfolds. A totally illuminating, delicate, wild experience of personal and collective movement. What can we learn from the darkness? Do we move and sense differently in the dark? Do we connect in different ways? How far does it go?

This is a sensual, non-sexual dance exploration. You should be comfortable touching and being touched, and working with your own attraction and repulsion, as well as be able to move carefully, attentively, and respectfully in a space with others.

Sometimes there will be music, sometimes silence. You are free to sing or sound as you feel, but please speak only if necessary.

This is a sober event. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Bring your own blindfold if you prefer. Mindfolds, where you can keep your eyes open without any light getting in, will be available for $20 or to rent for $2.

Every Saturday 7-10

1970 Chestnut St, Berkeley, CA USA

The Thursday Jam is a weekly all-level open contact improv and movement space from 8:30-11:30pm.

The jam is held at the lovely and spacious Finnish Hall in Berkeley. This is a beautiful venue with high arched ceilings, forced-air heat, and 2300 sq. ft of nice oak dance floor. It’s located at 1970 Chestnut St in Berkeley (near University/Sacramento) just 3 blocks from the North Berkeley BART station.
(Map and directions)

The jam offers an inclusive environment that is warm, friendly and very welcoming of folks new to Contact Improv. There is a varied soundscape with a mix of silence, downtempo/ambient recorded tracks, and occasionally tasteful improvised live music.

We look forward to seeing you!

10:30 am-noon: Playful Contact Improvisation Jam

No matter your level of experience, from beginner to advanced contacter, you are invited to join our playful, friendly, safe, and inclusive gathering from 9:30 am onwards.

9:30 am-10:30 am: Skills, Exercises, and Explorations (rotating teachers)
After a brief group warmup, learn (or deepen your understanding of) foundational contact improvisation skills, then put those skills into action with exercises and explorations. All levels of experience welcomed and engaged!

10:30 am-noon: Playful Contact Improvisation Jam
Opening circle at 10:30 is followed by a different brief group opening score each week, then open jam with a closing circle at the end to harvest the fruits of our experiences. Some have asked: “what exactly does ’playful” mean" or “Why call it ‘playful jam’ and not just ‘jam’?” The answer: recognizing that any contact improvisation jam can include playful qualities, we carry out an intention for extra, pervasive spirit of play in this jam. We often make “playscapes” using big gymnastics blocks, and incorporate “toys” like balls and hoops in our jam.

Contact Improv for Actors
929 East 2nd St #105, Los Angeles, CA 90012 USA

Spring Workshop with Michael Doonan

Contact Improv for Actors explores the fundamentals of physical preparation through stretch, strength, and alignment; and the relationship of the actor to the physical environment, to the group, and to a specific ‘other’. The result is an instinctual, unpredictable, and undeniable presence.

Every actor has the potential to develop these instincts, skills, and presence regardless of size, weight, or previous training, and this is achieved through a combination of physical and mental preparation.

Michael Doonan holds an M.F.A. in Acting from UC Irvine, where he now teaches Contact Improvisation with Annie Loui, a heralding force in this work. Michael has studied with international theatre artists at the Grotowski Institute in Poland and also with the Moscow Art Theatre and Harvard/ A.R.T. in Cambridge, MA.

Time: Sundays 2-5 pm. Begins 3/6/11. Ends 4/10/11.
Place: Loft Ensemble/ 929 East 2nd St #105/ 90012
Price: $200 total. Payment plans available.

12:30-1:30 pm Contact Improvisation Skills Class w/ Kristen Stake
This class will dip into the basics of Contact Improvisation including: following the point of contact, honing one’s relationship to gravity, and moving in partnership with others. Exercises will include: bodywork, floor work, alignment, listening, sharing weight, and composition. The goal of the class will be to develop a conscious relationship with gravity, anatomy, other people, and the environment to prepare ourselves for a fruitful jam experience.

1:30-3 pm
Contact Improvisation jams provide an open space for movement exploration and research in the dance form. Dancers and movers are self-directed and responsible for their own safety. Dancers may use the time to practice skills, to drop-in and relax, or to explore solo, duo, and group dancing. Anyone can enter or exit a dance at any time and therefore, it is important to know your boundaries and ask for help if you feel unsure.

This class is for all levels. The focus will most likely be beginners, but a good beginning class is great for newbies and oldies : )

Class will begin with solo explorations to get grounded while building kinesthetic awareness and a CI principle du jour. From there we will move to partnering exercises and explorations that investigate and build the skills of weight sharing, momentum and improvisation. All of this will be done through the lens of the Alexander Technique and various somatic modalities.

$17 drop in class or buy a class card that is good for unlimited classes for a year.

First and Third Fridays of the month drop in classes for all levels.

We develop skills in contact improvisation while finding the freedom in the form. Support, alignment, leading/following, upside down work, lightness, moving without manipulation, vision exploration, sound, solo, duet, trios, and different improvisational scores are some of our investigations. We span the subtle and the large. The objectives are learning through the movement, letting the body live in its natural state, and of course, fun!

No Underscore June 23 at Eden’s – see Global Underscore instead

The Underscore is a long-form dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith and practiced worldwide. The form includes contact improvisation and allows for a full spectrum of physical forms and changing states, often including periods of quiet internal activity and other times of higher energy and interactive dancing. The Underscore’s undirected practice affords simultaneously a framework for research, a forum for play, and an opportunity to experience collective improvised composition. Open to all, familiarity with CI and the Underscore suggested. To familiarize new participants, Underscore NYC offers “talk throughs” to introduce the language, glyphs and structures of the Underscore. Stay from start to finish.

The Open Movement Jam consistently draws many contact and non-contact movement improvisers and dance-friendly musicians, meeting Monday evenings at the Bill Young Studio, 100 Grand Street, Soho, NYC. We are open to all sorts of movers — including those who may be trained in or trying out various dance forms, contact improv, theater, martial arts, yoga and other styles — and welcome participants with all sorts of physical capabilities. We continue to mix many out-of-town visitors and other newcomers with semi-regulars and regular participants, meeting in this enormous, beautiful space.

The jam and its predecessors have 40 years of continuous participation:
> Carrier Pigeon events of the 1960s (conceived by Kenneth King, still the most accomplished and supportive improviser around)
> Robert Wilson School of Byrds of the 1970s (from which more than a dozen of the collaborators still participate, including the great Christopher K.)
> Open Movement at PS 122 from the 1970s-90s (founded by Charles Dennis, who regularly contributes his creative energy and ideas) and
> The Jam at Judson Church 1999-2001 (founded by Bill Jacobson, who brought the jam to the center of the Village and participates whenever in town.)
> Open Movement Jam at the Children’s Aid Society 2001-2011.

Thank you to all who bring the wonderful energy that makes this event.

All movers and shakers are cordially invited to dance to the sounds of the acoustic improv musicians at the Open Music Circle, now six years old! We meet regularly in Brooklyn and Manhattan. There is no structured agenda and no director. The musicians sit in a circle or semi-circle and start with silence. Then someone begins to play or sing or move. Then we watch, listen to each other and, when we want, begin to play, vocalize or move accordingly, and so it goes. Finally we end the evening with silence.

To attend, first sign up for free on and then join the Circle at and finally rsvp there for the particular gathering you wish to attend. For additional informat0on email

To help pay for on-line fees, supplies, instrument repairs, our Manhattan rent, and other operational expenses, a donation is requested from musicians and dancers alike at the end of the evening in the amount of $ 5 at each Circle in Brooklyn and $10 at each Circle in Manhattan.

In Brooklyn, we meet at the Circle Space, 485 Ocean Avenue; in Manhattan, we meet at the New York Insight Meditation Center, 28 West 27th St.

We meet on Sunday nights: on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, we meet in Brooklyn from 7 – 9 PM; on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month we meet in Manhattan from 8:15 – 10 PM.

The jam begins with a guided warm up (usually 45 min), where we introduce some basic CI skills that facilitate the practice of contact dance. Later in the jam, our own body language will take us to explore freely this form of dance.

Contact improvisation is a dance technique in which points of physical contact provide the starting point for exploration through movement improvisation. Weekly meetings of practitioners that take place world-wide are called “jams,” dancers come together to spontaneously explore forms and ideas, with some group agreement about structure and duration of the exploration. The dance vocabulary is not closed, so all who practice the form contribute to the constant expansion and greater understanding of the dance form’s vocabulary, which is exchanged and taught among practitioners world-wide. While Contact dancers usually stay touching or in physical contact for much of a dance, it can occur that partners never touch yet there is a clear “listening” and energetic connection/intention that creates the “contact” of their shared dance.

Drop In Sliding Scale Fee $5-$15 dollars. Second Tuesday of each month Free! Members pay $40 to take 4 classes and Jam compliments of Divine Play!

Tuesdays, 7:15 – 9:00 pm. Begins January 31, 2012.
