Joey Lehrer is a movement teacher, somatic practitioner and improvisational performance artist. He is a respected and key member of the Australian CI community as a teacher, writer and performer of the form – having taught extensively across Australia and New Zealand, both open workshops and at tertiary institutions. Dancing from an early age, Joey began CI seriously in 2001 – and hasn’t looked back since! He has studied with State of Flux, Rinske Ginsberg, Helen Clarke Lapin, Martin Keogh & Ray Chung.

In recent years, Joey has been a core member of the organising team for the Australian Contact Improvisation Convergence, ACIC, and is currently a co-editor of Proximity magazine. He teaches regular CI classes at Studio 202, where he is also a Pilates Practioner and Remedial Massage Therapist. In teaching CI, Joey enjoys creating a sense of playful focus, a space for exploration and fun, where ideas can be embedded into a container of ‘simply dancing’ so that improvisation enhances the unfolding of concepts or skills.

Heike Kuhlmann teaches dance and movement for adults and kids for more than 13 years. Just in 1998 I discovered CI when I was taking released based technique classes with Stephanie Maher. Since that I took plenty of classes, workshops with many different teachers. For some years I integrated parts of CI in my dance and movement classes. In 2007 than I started to teach it pureley and name it. I like to combine BMC and Contact Improvisation using the BMC principles for discovering the bodys possibility in movement and expression as well as for repatterning. Still I integrate other bits into the CI classes from my dancer´s and movement therapist background.

On one hand I realized how much a somatic approach helps people to come into a satisfying dance. How much they discover about themselves and what that changes their dance with a partner, but also how much a body awareness gives benefits to their life. On the other hand I am very much interested in the performative and virtuous aspect of CI. So I like to bring in contemporary dance techniques, impro exercises and scores into the classes, so that the participants can artistically express themselves.

Starting of with a university degree in Physical Education and Biology, I studied Dance Pedagogy with Leanore Ickstadt and did my MA in Choreography. For the Diploma in Integrative Bodywork & Movement Therapy (DiplIBMT), I studied deeply Body-Mind Centering and Authentic Movement.

2011 I worked as dancer in the piece „On the way to immortality“, was part of the Organization of the first Global Water Dances Berlin and the PHYINXperformancesalon.

In 2010 I taught at the Easter Improfestival in Göttingen and at Transcontact in Cluj Napoca.

In 2009/2010 I was invited to the first Contact Festival in Florianopolis, Brasil.

I also create my own performances. In our last colloborational we worked work on weather and climate change. This was shown in Berlin, june 2009. The further development of it was shown in May 2010.

In 2008 she developped collobpartively the performance installation „Nirgendland“. choreographed „Dancing on water“ and danced at the Masdanca festival- Gran Canaria. In 2007 she won the Berlin price of violence prevention for creation a dancetheatre school project on violence through fairytales.

In 2006 she created the solo „To be looked at“ for the conference „Slavery in Contemporary Arts – Trauma, Memory and Visuality“. An article about that performance has been published in „Slavery in Art and Literature (2010).

I have been studying bodywork and movement since 1986 and have taught contact improvisation since 1990. I have been much influenced by release work, Feldenkrais, BMC and Aikido. I see my strong interest in radical social theory and my love of contactimprovisation as two aspects of the same desire.

I host/facilitate/teach a weekly class and jam in Grass Valley, CA in the Sierra Foothills, which I've been leading since Fall of 2005. We have a wonderful, warm-hearted group of about 20, but only about 6-12 show up on any given night, mixed levels. I also bring out-of-town teachers in to lead weekend workshops, and I'm available to travel and teach workshops. I've been studying CI since something like 1989, always learning and growing and loving it, and bringing in elements from other movement studies. In my teaching I present CI as an art/dance form, an awareness practice, a tool for self-revelation and self-change, and a source of endless fun and discovery. My teaching focuses on deepening into the practice of CI through cultivating awareness, sensitivity, technique and individual exploration. I would love to teach at festivals or do a workshop in your community.

i write about it some here and in offshoot links, and teach sporadically. i crave more opportunity to play with other intent practitioners with a laboratory/exploratory focus – but, of course, i get a lot of that craving satisfied at jams, particularly at the wonderful dc sunday jam, which i help maintain.

Paula Byrne is the product of a jazz drummer (father) and figure skater (mother). She spent her early years in ballet and modern dance, working as a professional dancer from 1981 to 1989. She left the dance world at the ripe old age of 27, realizing that a career based on expertise and appearance was short-lived.

It would be many years before she found dance again, this time, her own natural movement. She stumbled upon ecstatic dance in 1995 at Breitenbush Hot Springs, where Vinn Marti was hosting a workshop. That weekend changed her life forever. She knew she had found her calling and began her path as a movement teacher. She studied extensively with Gabrielle Roth and core 5Rhythms teachers and apprenticed with Vinn Marti from 1996 to 2002.

Paula was an Oracle Developer in the high-tech field for 20 years. She left that career in 2005 to devote herself full-time to her soul-work in assisting people to remember and reconnect to the body as a source of wisdom, pleasure and joy in the present moment.

Paula is the creator of OneDance™, a moving meditation based on the 7 chakras, and leads classes and workshops in Wild Grace™, Soul Motion, Contact Improv, Authentic Movement and Blindfolded Trance Dance. She is Owner and Director of SomaSpace, offering her studio to artists, dancers, writers, musicians and creatives as place to practice and present their craft.

I am an experimental dance artist, inspired by my studies of new dance, dance-theater, contact improvisation, and butoh. I'm also a bodyworker and use healing practices, such as body-mind centering, yoga and feldenkrais, as a source of creativity, inspiration and physical training. I research extended dance techniques, which are unique movements, individual to my particular body. I also develop teaching methods to help other dancers find their own extended techniques. Dance is a social art form and I'm a promiscuous collaborator. I'm mostly known for my collaborations with avant-garde musicians, particularly my duo with Andy Hayleck (When We're Older), but I also work with other dance, theater and visual artists. I have choreographed over 15 original dance works, and am also an avid improviser. I'm currently practicing free improvisation: dances without any predetermined plan. My work is always site-specific in that I seek to activate and enliven all spaces that I dance in, whether they are theaters, studios, homes, places of business or the outdoors. I also seek to connect audience members to their own embodied, corporeal experience with the immediacy and spontaneity of improvisation.

investigating ci since the mid 80s, i am still engaged and interested. what a fascinating journey it has been thus far. i teach ci at juniata college, where ci36 took place, and also enjoy traveling to teach, perform and dance at festivals. of course i have favorite partners, but isnt it wonderful when you have a great dance with someone you just met and will never see again? what a marvelous universal language. while in the moment of a dance, i feel like i am on the inside of physics—attuned, alert, and calm all at once, and yet there is something distinctly alive about the intimacy of even small, private shifts.
